As best I can tell, it happened almost entirely because of Serrano himself. Few writers have developed the kind of fan connection on social media that he has, and I dont just mean that he has a lot of followers or that those followers like him a lot. He does (43.1K Twitter followers as of this writing), and they do, but the secret ingredient, the thing that caused thousands of people to buy out  The Rap Year Book  at three of the largest book retailers in the world and force the publisher to print more copies, is the level to which Serrano has involved his followers in the story of his own burgeoning success as a writer. But thats actually kind of my point about Serrano and The Rap Year Book.  Hes funny, yes, but hes also warm and inclusive and profuse in the thanks and amazement hes been expressing as it has become increasingly clear that his book isnt just going to be successful, but massively so. I honestly think the people who were preordering his book by the dozens were doing so largely because they liked Serrano as a person, even though the only real contact theyd had with him was through his writing on  Grantland and on Twitter. Obviously, it was more than enough. I mean, you should see how many people note that they dont really like or listen to rap music when they let Serrano know theyve purchased his book. Theyre rooting for  him, first and foremost. Clearly, Im impressed with the dude. I preordered  The Rap Year Book  myself back in September, and after I saw that it  had sold out at basically every online book retailer, I reached out to Serrano to ask if hed be up for talking with me about the whole crazy series of events and how he was processing it all. He emailed me back in four minutes, said yes, and left me his phone number. When I texted him later to set up a time for the call, he addressed me as homie. He did it again when he answered my call during Monday Night Football, which Serrano was watching from his hotel in L.A. during a brief book tour, during which  The Rap Year Book had sold out of every store at which the author stopped. For the record, nobodys ever called me homie in my life. Im the kind of white dude Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle joke  about in their stand-up sets doofy and awkward and square not exactly homie material. But Serrano made me feel included and cool and as I talked to him it was even more apparent why  The Rap Year Book was blowing up: his writing does exactly the same thing. As for the book itself, I assumed that it was a long-gestating passion project, the kind of thing that any list-making music geek would kill to publish. Not so. I didnt have any ideas for whatever book I was gonna do next, Serrano told me.  His editor suggested writing about the most important rap songs from every year since the music first became popularized. Serranos response? That sounds awful I dont want to do that. At all. I mean, I like rap, but I dont wanna read about fuckin Afrika Bambaataa. Thats just not a thing Im into. Strike one for my readerly instincts, I guess. But here we are all this time later and the book is not only published, but its hit  the New York Times Best Seller List. So what changed? Serrano: A couple months later, my wife decided we needed to move into a house. We were living in a townhome at the time with three kids wed just had the baby. That means we needed a down payment. Suddenly, that book didnt seem like such a bad idea after all. Though Serrano isnt the music list-making fiend I imagined him to be while reading  The Rap Year Book, there  are some  aspects of them he wont deny: Lists are just fun, and they always inspire some sort of conversation. The stories, though, are another instance of that openness that seems to mark Serranos writing, his internet persona, and his actual self. I jumped into a river and washed the blood away, then lay in the sun and let the water drip from my body into the earth. The remnants dried in the heat, and I drifted to sleep. When I awoke again, someone was pressed spoonlike against my back. I turned and found Hector, naked like me and aroused. He kissed me and as he did, we both changed. I sat bolt upright in bed. It is used by plantsand animals for basic biological processes which would be impossible without theuse of water. The origin of all life can be traced back to the water in theEarths precambrien seas. Water is also the universal solvent. It reacts withmore elements and compounds than any other substance known to man. Water is a polar molecule made up of on atom of hydrogen and two atoms ofoxygen. It is attracted to itself by hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonds are weakerthan covalent bonds, but collectively these bonds hold water together and giveit its cohesiveness. These bonds are also very important to waters ability toabsorb heat, as without hydrogen bonds water would have a boiling point of -80degrees C and a freezing point of -100 degrees C. In reality, however, water has a boiling point of 100 degrees C and afreezing point of 0 degrees C. The amount of energy needed to raise thetemperature of one gram of water by one Celsius degree is called a Calorie. OneCalorie is about twice as much energy as you need to warm one gram of most otherfluids by the same amount. This makes water much better for regulating thetemperatures of animals and the environment. Water also has a very high heat of vaporization. Converting one gram ofcold water into ice requires 80 Calories of energy. Converting the same amountof very hot water into steam requires 540. The high amounts of energy requiredto change water from its liquid state make water tend to stay a fluid.Theprocess of freezing water involves slowing down the activity of the watermolecules until they contract and enter into a solid state. Once the ice iscooled down to 4 degrees or less, the hydrogen bonds no longer contract, butthey become rigid and open, and the ice becomes less dense. Because the ice hasbecome less dense, it floats on liquid water. Water freezes from the top down. Once the top freezes, it acts as an insulator, so that the water beneath ittakes a very long time to cool off enough that it freezes. This also traps justenough warmth to keep marine animals alive during the winter. The process of turning water into steam is a different story. Because itrequires the breaking of waters hydrogen bonds, this process takes far moreenergy than it does to turn water into ice. The extra energy that is used inconverting water into steam helps keep the overall temperature from getting toohot. In this manner water regulates the temperature of both animals when theysweat, and the earth through evaporation. Water affects the earths ecosystems in very important ways as well. Whenwater in the earths saltwater bodies evaporates into the air. This water vaporthen cools off, becomes liquid again, and then falls as rain or snow. The saltis left behind, and the resulting precipitation helps replenish the water inlakes, streams, rivers, and the groundwater supply. However, all of this watereventually flows down to the level of the oceans, and the cycle begins again. Because of this cyclical pattern, water is consided to be a renewable resource. However, some chemical impurities can remain with the water, even through theprocess of evaporation. These remain in the water and cause problems until theyare either filtered out by natural or artificial processes, or until they arediluted enough that they are no longer a problem. Of all the water on the earth,only three percent is fresh.
